The Pilates Way(s)
Pilates focuses on both mobility and stability, and its ultimate control of both. This technique is not only proven to help sculpt strong, functional bodies, it helps correct muscular imbalances, improves posture and balance, increases flexibility, and releases tensions, all of which combined help your body work at its most efficient level.
There are divides in the Pilates community between classical Pilates teachers and more contemporary teachers. What’s our take on it? As long as you are doing the exercises following the Pilates Principles as Joseph Pilates intended, you are doing Pilates. We know a lot more in exercise science than people did back in the mid 1900’s, so it is now safe to build on Joe’s repertoire.
One of the main takeaways of Pilates is the importance of the mind-body connection. We move with precise, controlled movements, all initiating from our Center. As Joseph Pilates said, “It is better to do five repetitions perfectly, than twenty without paying attention”. For more info regarding the Pilates Principles, check out this blog post!
