More Than Just Jumping: Creative Ways I Use the Jumpboard

If you’ve ever taken a jumpboard class with me, you know—it’s not just about jumping.

Yes, we bounce. Yes, it’s fun. But there’s so much more you can do with a jumpboard than just getting your heart rate up. Over the years, it’s become one of my favorite tools for building strength, adding variety, and getting creative on the Reformer.

Let’s start with the basics…

The jumpboard is a padded platform that attaches to the footbar end of the Reformer. You can lie on your back and jump off it for low-impact cardio, combining control, flow, and core activation. It’s a great way to move with energy while staying kind to your joints.

But the magic is in the versatility

When I program jumpboard classes for Saran Pilates, I always mix things up. We’re not jumping nonstop—because your body deserves more than just repetition. My goal is to give you a full-body experience that feels energizing, supportive, and surprisingly fun.

Here are just a few ways I love to use it:

👉 Lying down for classic jumping—building endurance, lower-body strength, and deep core control

👉 Kneeling for upper-body focused jumps that light up the shoulders and back

👉 Sitting on the carriage facing the side of the reformer for single-arm presses (hello, core stability)

👉 Using it for assistance—like pressing into it with my feet during back extensions on the long box, facing away from the board. It adds the perfect amount of support to be able to lift up into a bigger, and more comfortable, back extension.

👉 Slowing it down for jump prep or footwork that feels grounded and controlled before taking off

I love using the jumpboard as both a dynamic tool and a point of stillness. You might push into it, press against it, or just use it to connect back to your breath and body.

Why it works

  • It’s low-impact but powerful—great for joints, great for energy
  • It activates your core in every phase of the movement
  • It improves coordination and balance in a whole new way
  • It’s creative, fun, and full of possibilities
